Formally known as the Ross Hotel and owned by the Ross's (we are unsure if
they were any relation of Sir John Ross of the North West Castle) then in
the late '30s it was bought by Margaret and Norris Spencer and renamed
Spencer's Hotel.
In the late 1950's the hotel was taken over by Molly and Wullie
Pollock. (Molly was the sister of Margaret Spencer)
The Spencer's then
renamed the hotel as The Polnor.
The Polnor Hotel at first was mainly busy with travellers, lorry drivers,
delivery drivers (in those days mainly delivery
vans) and others who came to Stranraer. The Spencer's
remained with the hotel until it was sold, in 1983, to Mrs Pollock (a
niece of Mr & Mrs Colin Arkless). Mr and Mrs Pollock started with a
Cocktail License that had to be held for one year, before being
granted a Full License to trade alcohol as a public house in the early
'70s. They kept the hotel's name for a year before changing it to the
current name; Arkhouse Inn.
The Arkless family held onto the place until 1991, when it was sold to Mrs
Arkless' brother, Paul McDevitt, and his wife Leslie. Paul & Leslie ran
the hotel until August 15th, 2005, when Mr and Mrs Sheppard took ownership
of the hotel and have kept (and intend to keep) the current name.
All previous owners were very successful in this hotel and wish the
current owners the same success in the future.
